Handling The British Heat: A Guide For Homeowners In The Summer

British summers have changed a lot in recent years. What was once a vaguely warm and sunny season is now the time of year when we’re plunging into extreme heats, droughts, and high levels of humidity. There’s always a lot of moisture in the air when you’re in the UK, and that makes the hotter days all the worse! And even when you’re trying to relax at home, taking time off for your summer holiday, there’s little relaxing that can actually be done. It’s just too hot to sit back and enjoy a good cup of tea or an ice lolly, even if you’ve got the fan on full blast! So let’s go through a few of the best ways to handle the new British heat, and try and stay cool in our homes and gardens this summer time.

Focus on One Room at a Time

It’s usually best to focus cooling efforts on a singular room, as homes in the UK are hard built for beating back the cold, rather than the heat.

Triple glazed windows, cavity insulation in every wall and ceiling, thick curtains and doors, etc., all add up to a tightly heated space that used to help us keep back the chilly conditions that were far more common.

As such, any cooling efforts you could try in the here and now tend to only go so far. So, to get the best out of them, you’ll need to focus on one room at a time. Most homeowners opt for the living room here, as it’s the most accessible room, and is usually the room you spend the most time in anyway.

Think About Getting AC Installed

Yes, even in the UK, air conditioning is becoming all the rage! We’re needing it more and more as time goes on, with traditional fans and air coolers just not up to the job anymore.

And thankfully, it’s easier (and more affordable) than ever to actually get AC installed on your property. You can place AC outlets in any room you like, but even just having one or two vents max will make all the difference.

Set Up External Sun Shade

There’s only so much you can do from inside your home! And if you have no way to cool it internally, other than a fan in the corner and trying to stay hydrated, you’ll want to focus your efforts outside instead.

This is where the heat is coming from, and it’s also where you’ll get the most out of blocking that heat from reaching you in the first place.

Sun shade can come from a variety of sources, including trees out the front of the property, or an awning over the window of the room you’re in. Or both, if you’ve got the time to set both of them up!

British heat is no joke, and needs preparing for these days! So, make sure your home is ready for the summer with the tips above.
