Traveling with a baby or even a toddler can feel like going on an impossible mission. From managing tantrums to packing supplies and keeping everyone content, flying can seem like an exhausting prospect. But with proper preparation and some handy tricks, flying can become much less of a hassle. No matter if this is their first ever flight or you have done so in the past, this post will give you some tips and techniques that will make for a smoother flying experience for both you and your baby.

Prep Is Important
Planning Flights Wisely
Selecting the perfect flight can make a huge difference when traveling with a baby. Try choosing flights around your child’s usual nap or bedtime to maximize their chance of sleeping mid flight. Red-eye flights or midmorning departures often work best for many parents. Direct flights can also save you from stress through eliminating layovers and extra boarding processes.
Organize Baby Essentials
Organization is important when packing for a baby. Be sure to have all of the essentials, like diapers, wipes, change of clothing (both yours and theirs), baby food or formula as well as favorite toys or comfort items, in your carry-on bag before traveling with your baby. Also include medications or baby-friendly snacks which could come in handy.
The Airport Game Plan
Arrive Early
Going through security checkpoints and boarding processes with a baby in tow can take longer than you anticipated. Arriving well ahead of schedule ensures a stress-free trip and allows enough time for any unforeseeable events such as diaper changes or feeding sessions that come up during your flight.
Be a Security Pro
At security checkpoints, avoid struggling with multiple items in your arms by using a travel buggy for plane to keep your baby secure while freeing your hands up for other things. All liquids (breast milk or formula included) should be placed in clear plastic bags for easier inspection, and you could request a pat-down search instead of walking through metal detectors while holding your baby.
Tips for a Comfortable Flight
Choosing the Right Seat
To have better legroom and accessibility, try booking a bulkhead row seat near the aisle. Requesting a bassinet in advance from airlines may provide your baby with a safe place for rest during long flights.
Ears and Altitude Adjustments
Babies may struggle with cabin pressure changes during takeoff and landing. To help their ears in adjusting, give them a pacifier, bottle, or breastfeeding during these times. The motion encourages swallowing which helps relieve any potential discomfort in their ears.
Entertainment and Engagement
Boredom can be your worst enemy on a plane ride. Be prepared with toys, books and activities to keep your baby engaged during the flight. Soft items are recommended in order to minimize disturbance to fellow passengers. Indulging your child with screen time on longer flights may also prove helpful.
Conclusion
Flying with a baby may present its own set of challenges, yet it can also be an immensely rewarding adventure that opens doors to shared memories and new experiences. When you are more prepared, patient, and open-minded during your travel plans with your little one, you can take off confidently into the skies. Don’t panic, as any turbulence (both physical and metaphoric) is part of the process. With time and practice you will soon be flying like an expert.
