Have you ever seen a show home? They’re typical of new builds, and they’re designed to be clean and appealing to the eye. They’re pretty, but they’re also always kind of bland. That’s because they aren’t designed to be anyone’s home, just a representation of what a home could look like. Ideally, your home should reflect who you are as a person. It should be designed for your needs and with your preferences on show. Even if it’s not perfect, it’s yours, and it should reflect that. Here’s how to Make Your House Feel Like a Home.
Wall Art
One of the easiest ways to make your house feel like a home is to add art. Unless you happen to be a talented artist yourself, you probably won’t be hanging art you’ve made yourself, but this doesn’t mean that the artwork you choose can’t add a stamp of your personality to your property.
You can find some great paintings and prints if you go to second-hand stores, especially if you like more old-fashioned landscapes and other art pieces. Or you can buy posters and artwork featuring your favorite media, or simply things you like.
You don’t need to be afraid to go quirky. You can either fill your walls with art or keep it simple, The most important thing is that you like it.
Houseplants
Houseplants are a small and subtle addition to your home, but they’re an important one. First, they look nice. Plants add colour, life, and even nice smells to your home. Even if you’re a bit of a black thumb and struggle to keep plants alive, you can find species that will thrive on neglect.
In addition to adding to how your home looks, houseplants can also contribute to a healthier home.
Houseplants are proven to improve the air quality of your home, but they also impact mental and cognitive health. People concentrate better when they’re near plants and we’re just happier around nature.
Lighting
It can be easy to ignore the lighting in your home, but you can have fun while playing around with it. First, think about the natural light in each room. Blinds and curtains can block, direct, or diffuse natural light.
You can also use mirrors to make a room seem brighter because they reflect natural light really well. This is a good way to add something to your walls as well.
Another thing to consider is your light fixtures and bulbs. Different bulbs have different brightnesses and even colours. You can get color-changing bulbs if you like, so you can set the ambience in your home to suit every occasion.
As well as the main lights, think about lamps and smaller light sources for when you want a more cosy evening in. A living room corner lamp, for example, can make a room seem a little brighter without having to turn the main lights on. So, if you want to watch a film without being plunged into darkness, you can still relax and enjoy it.
