Accessible, Dog-Friendly Beaches Around Newquay

Accessible, Dog-Friendly Beaches Around Newquay

One of the first things we did when we arrived in Newquay was to establish where the accessible, dog-friendly beaches are in the area. Fortunately, Newquay is littered with such beaches! We have listed our favourite accessible, dog-friendly beaches, we hope you find our list useful!

Daymer Beach

Postcode: PL27 6SA

Parking: A large pay and display is located extremely close to the beach. No disabled exemptions.

Toilets: There are public toilets located in the car park. The cost to use these is 50p.

Accessibility

This was the most accessible beach we visited. You can park in the disabled parking bay and the beach is extremely close by and is accessed via a flat path.

Dogs

This beach is dog friendly all year round. Daymer really did feel like a doggy beach! There were lots and lots of dogs off their leads and playing in the water. Visitors were training their dogs here too which was nice to see.

The Beach

This was the first beach we visited on our trip and it was one to remember. The water was perfectly blue and warm. The sand was clean and white and had plenty of shells! We set ourselves up and were here for a good 3 hours or so just enjoying the water and the waves.

There is a shop situated in the car park. This sells lots of beach goodies and also has a cafe too.

Daymer was probably one of the most accessible, dog-friendly beaches we have ever visited.

Crantock Beach

Postcode: TR8 5RN

Parking: A large National Trust car park is located extremely close to the beach. Parking is free for National Trust members and blue badge holders.

Toilets: There are public toilets located on the car park. These are free to use.

Accessibility

The beach can be accessed over the sand dunes. However, for those who prefer a more gentle approach, the beach can be accessed via a flat path. If you prefer to go over the sand dunes, then take the path to the right of the toilets. The more accessible route is the path facing the toilets. This was a very accessible beach and I would recommend this beach for those with mobility issues, or those in a wheelchair.

Dogs

This is another dog-friendly beach, There were plenty of dogs off their leads and paddling in the water.

The Beach

I think we all agreed, this was our favourite beach in Newquay. Oddly enough, we didn’t actually set foot in the sea. There is a river which flows into the sea, it is approximately half a mile long. We set ourselves up next to the river and remained there for the afternoon. The river is just about shallow enough for children to stand in yet deep enough to swim in. The river has different depths, making walking in it rather fun! The water is crystal clear. My daughter enjoyed playing on the paddle board in the river and the dogs enjoyed a swim too!

There is a coffee shop on the beach to grab some refreshments.

Watergate Bay

Postcode: TR8 4AA

Parking: There are a number of large pay and display car parks about a 2-minute walk from the beach.

Toilets: There are public toilets which are located next to the car park. There is a 20p charge, however, when we visited they were free to use.

Accessibility

From the car park, the beach is accessible via a relatively gentle slope. This could potentially be difficult for visitors with limited mobility or those in a wheelchair when exiting the beach as the slope ascends. However, the walk was not too strenuous.

Dogs

Dogs are welcome on Watergate Bay all year round. There were lots of dogs on the beach and I can imagine this is a popular beach with local dog walkers.

The Beach

The rocky cliffs make for a perfect backdrop to this picturesque beach. The was relatively far out when we arrived and we had a 5-minute walk from the water to our spot on the dry part of the beach. Clear blue waters make this a wonderful swimming spot. There is a shop at the entrance of the beach which sells all sorts of beach-related goodies. There is also a coffee shop close to the beach too.

Constantine Bay Beach

Postcode: PL28 8JL

Parking: There is a small pay-and-display car park located about a 1-minute walk away from the beach.

Toilets: There are toilets located at the cafe in the car park. A donation is requested.

Accessibility

The walk from the car park to the beach is very flat. As stated above, the car park is close to the beach thus making this a great beach for those with limited mobility or those in a wheelchair.

Dogs

Dogs are permitted on the beach year-round. We did let our dogs off their leads here for a short period of time. There were a number of other dog walkers on this beach.

The Beach

Constantine Bay is yet another beautiful beach. The beach is covered in soft yellow sand. There are lots of rock pools for children to explore. The waves make this beach a great place for surfing, however, we were warned to be cautious if swimming here because, like a number of other beaches in the area, there are rip tides.

Towan Beach

Postcode: TR7 1EA

Parking: There is a pay-and-display car park about a 5-minute walk away from the beach.

Toilets: There are toilets in the Blue Reef Aquarium. When we asked for toilets, we were told to use these. I asked the staff upon entry and they were very friendly and said it was OK to use them. I assume they are used to beach visitors using their toilets!

Accessibility

This was perhaps the least accessible of the beaches we visited. It would potentially be difficult for a person with limited mobility to access the beach. The beach is accessed via steps. There aren’t many, but the stairway is a little steep. The walk from the beach to the car park is also a potential challenge for anyone with mobility issues. From the car park, visitors must walk down a gentle slope. However, this slope might be difficult to ascend on the way from the beach to the car park.

Dogs

Dogs are permitted on the beach year-round. Plenty of people had dogs off their leads here, however, we kept our dogs on their leads as the beach was quite busy. Towan Beach is very much a surfers/water sports kind of beach rather than a dog beach.

The Beach

If you can, Towan Beach is an absolute must-see if you’re in Newquay. The water is crystal clear. The rocks make for a great backdrop. Interestingly, there is a lone building on top of a rock. I was told this is now a holiday home, a very exclusive one which is very expensive to rent out! It is perfect for surfers! Our purpose for visiting was for a surfing lesson for my daughter. If you are looking for an excellent surf school, please check out SSS Surf School. The instructor, Emily was fabulous with my daughter. By the end of the lesson, my daughter could confidently stand on the board and surf! Indeed, this is now her new hobby!

There is a wonderful little cabin, Beach Bakery on the pier which sells the most delicious cornish pastys. And the cakes and coffee were delicious too.
