As part of our European road trip, we simply had to experience the Swiss Alps. This was the car journey of a lifetime! We drove through the Swiss Alps on two separate occasions during our road trip.
Switzerland to Italy
Our first drive through the Swiss Alps was on our way to Italy as we drove down to Pisa from Lake Lucerne. We had spent a night and 2 days in Switzerland and were simply in awe of the country. Little did we know, Switzerland would have so much more to offer!

We took the A2 and began the long journey to Pisa. Fortunately, it was the most picturesque journey we had been on to date.

The mountains were simply breathtaking.

The Alps seem to go on forever.

Often, we would find ourselves in a tunnel, driving through the mountains.

The roads in Switzerland are smooth and well-maintained. That, along with the views make driving through Switzerland an absolute dream.

There are plenty of services to stop off at and take a quick break.

Italy to Germany
Driving through the Alps has been one of the most memorable moments of my life. The second time we drove through the Alps was en route to Germany from Italy.

We took the E43. This allowed us to not only experience the Swiss Alps but also to stop in at Liechtenstein and Austria as well.

Driving from Lake Lugano, we experienced the Italian Alps.

The mountains became more condensed and we found ourselves all of a sudden back in Switzerland.

Seemingly without warning, we were high up in the Swiss Alps.

The views were simply spectacular.

The road seemed endless as we made our way through the mountains. I am terrified of heights and dared not to look down for most of the journey. At one point, I did and we were seemingly miles high in the clouds.

We stopped at a service station which was little more than a tuck shop and some toilets.
The views as we parked up were unforgettable. As we continued on towards Germany, we passed through quaint little villages.

The Lakes below us looked incredibly lush!
We enjoyed our short time in the Swiss Alps and it is safe to say it was an experience we will never forget. A return to the Swiss Alps is definitely on the cards!
