How To Design A Rustic Style Home

With the New Year on the horizon, your mind, like mine, may well be turning to all things interiors. At the moment, I am drawn to creating my very own rustic style home!

There are so many options when it comes to designing your ideal home, and the great thing is that you can essentially design it in any way you want to – whatever takes your fancy in terms of style, colour, decor, and so on can be yours.

However, it’s usually a good idea to have a theme that will help you narrow down the options in front of you and ensure that your home looks as cohesive and deliberate as possible. Yes, it’s fun to combine styles, but it’s not always a good look in the end. If you stick to just one style, then you’ll know it’s all going to come together to look good.

Having a rustic style home can be a good option if you want things warm and cosy, and with that in mind, here are some of the things you might need to think about and include.

The Colour Scheme

One of the most important elements of having a rustic interior design style is the colour scheme. If you can get this right, everything else will fall into place, and you’ll find it’s much easier to choose what to include in your home.

There are certain colours that always work well when you want a rustic look. Most of the time, you’ll want to include plenty of green, brown, and perhaps gold – and of course, you won’t want to make things too dark (these are generally dark colours), so you’ll also want to have a few pops of lighter shades like beige or cream. Try to stay away from white because it’s a little too modern and minimalist to really work with the rustic look.

Use Natural Elements

One of the most noticeable elements of the rustic look for your home is natural materials, especially wood. The idea is to make your house or flat look like you’ve essentially built it yourself from natural materials you’ve found, and although that’s probably not actually the case (although, of course, it might be – building your own home is a great idea if you can do it!), you can have a lot of fun choosing natural elements to include that make it seem like it is.

Start with what your home already has, as that helps you set the tone. If you have wooden ceiling beams, for example, you can have them restored and cleaned up so that they’re a real feature of your home rather than something that’s just hidden away. You can also include natural elements like indoor plants, wooden furniture, floorboards instead of carpeted or tiled floors, bare brick walls, and so on. Making your home look and feel more organic is a great way to get the rustic look.

Use Upcycled Furniture

One issue that people tend to have when they want to make their homes more rustic is their furniture. They’ll work hard on the interior decoration, like the walls and floor (and the ceiling if there are beams, as mentioned above), and then place a load of modern furniture in their rooms, or furniture that really doesn’t match with the rest of the house.

That’s because it can be hard to find good rustic furniture at a decent price (it does exist, though, so it’s worth looking at), but there is a solution – upcycle your old furniture. If you can take something that would otherwise have gone to waste and refurbish it so that it fits in with your home’s theme (or have someone else do it if you prefer), then you can have a wonderful rustic home.

I hope I have given you some inspiration on how to create a rustic style home.
