Just because it’s a rainy day doesn’t mean you and the kids can’t go out. Many people choose to stay indoors when it rains, but it’s not the right thing to do if you want your kids to get some decent fresh air. There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad attire, and if you’re not wearing the right clothing, then rain can feel like a chore. However, with the right Wellington boots, a good umbrella, and a decent rain mack, you and your kids can get outside and have some fun and know that it’s going to be a decent day.
From buying a decent poncho to great waterproof trousers for kids, You and the kids can have a whale of a time outside in the rain, as long as you know which activities would suit the weather. The fun part is that there are plenty of rainy day activities that you can all be involved in. So pop on the wellies and get your waterproofs together because here are the activities that you can do for fun with the kids in the rain instead of being stuck indoors and bored.
- Make a list and go on a nature hunt. The fun thing about going out in the rain is that you’ll be able to spot a lot of different nature items without having to try too hard. The rain seems to make everything glisten, and there are certain things that only happen when it rains, such as the earthworms poking out through the soil. Snails, slugs and bugs come out when it rains because the world around them is moist. You can make it interesting by putting a list together and setting a challenge for your children to tick off. For example, how many snails can they find? How many earthworms can they come across during your walk? When you get back inside, you can always use any twigs or leaves that you’ve gathered to make a nature collage or use some leaves for leaf craft. You may have to wait for them to dry, however!
- Go splashing in the puddles. Children should be able to go and get as messy as they’d like, so if you’ve got the right waterproof trousers and wellies, let them go splashing in the puddles and get as muddy and wet as they want to. You could also pull on your wellies and go splashing too and remember what it’s like to be free. It’s great fun for all ages, but it really is helpful for kids to let off some steam, especially if they’ve been bored inside the house. A top tip here is to make sure that any waterproof trousers or wellies are outside of their dry clothes.
- Go to the beach. The beach isn’t just for bright, sunshiny days, you know. Heading to a nearby beach and building stone castles or sandcastles by piling up the stones and the wet sand to see who can build the highest castle is just as fun in the rain as it is in the sunshine. As we said, as long as they have the right waterproof clothing on, a little bit of rain doesn’t mean anything!
- Take the kids to the woods. The trees can act as giant umbrellas when you go to the woods with the kids, but you can find a lot of hidden squirrels, birds, and burrowed animals in the woods during the rain. You can also look for fallen pine cones and talk to your kids about what it means when the pine cones are open versus when they are closed. When it’s pouring rain like that, you can bet they’re going to get muddy, so make some mud pies as you come across any fallen logs.
- Bring the tape measure to measure a tree. Come across some amazingly big trees. You can help kids to count how old the tree is by counting the number of rings, especially if it’s fallen. You can also bring a tape measure with you to see whether or not you could measure around the tree and get the kids to stand and hold hands around it to see how many children it takes to measure a tree. This is something you don’t necessarily have to do in the rain, but it’s a fun way to be outside and having fun.
- Outside football games. You don’t need dry weather to play ball games, and actually, if you can find a pitch that is muddy or a basketball court that is full of puddles, you’re going to have so much more fun splashing with the ball in the rain than you are in any type of dry weather. The kids will be slipping away in the mud, but it’s always going to be fun to do that. And there’s no such thing as too muddy because there are showers and baths at home.
- Make up some rainy day songs. See how many songs you and the kids can think of. Take it and tend to go dull or sing them out loud and make sure that you do it while you’re splashing through the puddles. It’s a great way to relieve some stress.
- Make a treehouse in the mud. Find as many branches or sticks as you can and make tree houses of different sizes in the mud. You could even find a big tree with a strong low branch and then put loads of ferns and branches across it to make a shelter. It doesn’t have to be anything serious, it just has to be something fun.
Rainy days don’t have to be boring. There’s plenty of fun to be had when there’s splashing muddy weather outside. Get the kids wrapped up warm and in waterproof clothes and you’re about to have the best fun of your life. When it rains and pours, all you need is a decent pair of Wellington boots and a warm, bubble bath afterwards.
