Age-Appropriate TV Shows for a 10-Year-Old

Our youngest daughter is 10 years old now. She chooses to spend much of her time relaxing with us and watching TV. We are certainly past the Paw Patrol and Octonauts stage and have spent many an hour trying to find something we can all watch and enjoy together. In this post, I’ve put together a list of TV Shows we have watched together recently. It is so difficult to find Age-Appropriate TV Shows for our 10-year-old. The shows listed below might contain swear words, and some violence but no sexual scenes – which is exactly what we were looking out for!

The Traitors

My daughter’s all-time favourite TV show is The Traitors. And in fact, it’s become a firm favourite of ours too! The Traitors airs on BBC and is now in its second season.

The format of the show is rather simple. 20 individuals arrive at a location. The host, Claudia Winkleman, then selects a number of the contestants to be ‘The Traitors’. The rest of the contestants are known as the faithful. The Traitors ‘murder’ or eliminate a player from the game each night. The faithful must work out who are the traitors. All players have the opportunity to build the prize pot each day by taking part in challenges. The faithful have the opportunity to banish a traitor from the game each evening. If any traitors are left at the end of the game, then the traitors take the prize money, otherwise, it is shared amongst the remaining faithful.

The show draws you in! Even though the audience knows who the traitors are, you are still on the edge of your seat as you watch the faithful try and work out who they are.

Aside from the UK version of The Traitors, there is also a US version (filmed in the same Scottish castle but the contestants are American celebrities). There is also an Australian version. I must be honest, I was a little worried we wouldn’t enjoy the Aussie version, but we absolutely loved it. It was much more dramatic than the UK AND US version and we’re on the lookout for the second season!

Squid Game: The Challenge

I haven’t watched the original Netflix TV Series, Squid Game. It’s really not my cup of tea. Squid Game: The Challenge is, from my understanding, based upon the original TV series, in terms of the challenges and games that are played, however, the contestants are playing for a huge cash prize, as opposed to their lives!

The game begins with 456 players. Each player is worth $10,000. When a player is eliminated, $10,000 is added to the prize pot. In some of the games, the number of players is significantly reduced. Towards the end of the series, you will find yourself sat on the edge of your seat as you watch your favourite players fight for their place in the game.

My daughter loves this series. It was one of those series we watched over the course of a weekend because she couldn’t wait to find out who won! Us parents really enjoyed the show too. It was well-paced and gripping! This one is totally one of those age-appropriate TV shows for a 10-Year-Old!

Grimm

This is a rather old show now. It was first aired in 2011 and ran for 6 series. This made it perfect for us. We wanted a longer series that we could work our way through over the course of a long period of time. There are 123 episodes in total, so plenty to keep you busy!

Grimm is based upon the fairytale stories written by the Brothers Grimm. In the first episode, we are introduced to Nick Burghart who is a ‘Grimm’, a descendant of a group who fought against supernatural forces. This means he can see a group of people known as ‘Wesen’. The wesen look like ordinary people, however, they are in fact half human, half monster. We join Nick on his journey as he develops these powers.

This is a supernatural type of show. It does contain some violent scenes. There were some kissing scenes, but nothing too graphic. It’s a great show for those kids who do want to watch something a little more grown up, something that will scare them, just a bit, without making them too scared. I found it age-appropriate for my 10-year-old daughter.

Falling Skies

Another oldie but goodie! We recently finished watching Falling Skies with our daughter and she was hooked from the first episode!

The series follows Tom Mason and his sons. They are part of a group known as the Second Mas. Earth has been invaded by a race of aliens and humanity fights back. This is another supernatural-type series which did give my daughter a little scare in parts, but nothing that kept her awake at night! It was another great way to introduce her to some supernatural, drama series without scarring her too much. It really did get her little mind going in parts!

There are some violent scenes, but nothing too graphic and no graphic sexual scenes.

Poirot

My daughter loves mystery games! We have taken her to the cinema to watch the two most recent Poirot movies – Death on the Nile and A Haunting in Venice. Initially, these were a little hard for her to follow at times, however, she seems to be familiar with the formats of the shows now and doesn’t ask questions every 2 minutes!

We thought it would be a great idea for her to watch the Poirot TV series starring David Suchet. There are 70 episodes to work through so this has been keeping us busy recently.

The series is based on novels by Agatha Christi and follows Hercule Poirot, the famous Belgian detective as he solves murder mysteries using his ‘little grey cells’. It is a very much ‘who did it’ show which will have your little one guessing who the murderer is the whole way through. I have been watching Poirot since I was a child and still love the show. I even enjoy the episodes I can remember!
