What is a Cavapoochon?

When taking our dog for a walk, I often get asked ‘what breed is your dog?’ When I respond with ‘cavapoochon’ people often look puzzled and ask me to explain exactly what sort of dog he is. In this post, I will answer the question I get asked most often nowadays: What is a Cavapoochon?

A cavapoochon is a mixed-breed puppy. A mix of 3 different breeds (a tri-breed) – a poodle, bichon frise and a cavalier King Charles spaniel. We are the proud owners of a cavapoochon puppy. We are fortunate enough to own his Mum and Dad and he was a puppy from their first litter. Mum is a poochon (poodle and a bichon frise).

And his Dad is a cavapoo (poodle and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel).

Coat

Cavpoochons will require a trip to the groomers once in a while. Depending on how their coat grows, they may require a trip once every 3 months or so. This will help to maintain their coat.

Cavapoochons come in a variety of colours. The majority of them are light in colour – white, beige or apricot. Some can be brown or red in colour. This all depends upon the colour of their parents.

As puppies, their coats are thick and fluffy.

In our experience, the cavapoochon coat will change over time. A straight or wavy coat may turn curly once the puppy has had its first full groom. The colour of the cavapoochon’s coat may change too.

Are Cavapoochons Hypoallergenic?

Cavapoochons are a low-shedding breed. They are hypoallergenic which makes them perfect for allergy sufferers. They will require a certain amount of grooming. Brushing their coats a few times a week will ensure their coats are free from knots and mats.

Temperament

Cavapoochons are known for their gentle playful temperaments. They make the perfect family dog because they are friendly and well-natured. They love play time which makes them great for families with small children.

Cavapoochons are not generally an aggressive breed. In our experience, they will bark when they hear a knock at the door or feel a threat to their space. But they are always eager to greet people and dogs on a walk and ours have never shown aggression to another dog or to a person.

Are Cavapoochons easy to train?

Generally, cavapoochons are relatively easy to train. As a tri-breed dog, they bring many elements together. In particular, they have the intelligence of the poodle, a breed well known for learning tricks and skills quickly. They are people pleasers and will love to show off any new tricks they have learnt to their owners.

Appearance

Cavapoochons are sometimes referred to as “forever puppies” or “teddy bear puppies”. This is because they retain that cute puppy look as they grow into adults.

They can be a variety of different colours. Most commonly they are white, cream, apricot, red or brown.

Height and Weight

Cavapoochons typically grow to a height of between 9 and 14 inches to the shoulder. They typically weigh between 12 and 20 pounds. They are considered a small breed dog. However, they can be smaller and lighter or grow taller and heavier.

Exercise

As a small breed dog, a cavapoochon requires a maximum of around 1 hour of exercise per day. Cavapoochons do love to walk and generally do rather well on the lead once trained.

But exercise isn’t just walking a dog. Exercise can come in the form of playing fetch with the ball in the house. Or perhaps playing a game with the dog which is mentally challenging.

Do Cavapoochons make good pets?

The answer to this question is a resounding yes! Cavapoochons make excellent pets. They have a wonderful temperament, are extremely intelligent and relatively easy to train. Cavapoochons are eager to please their owners and love to show their humans the skills and tricks they have learned. Plus, they are incredibly cute!

Before welcoming a cavapoochon into your home, familiarise yourself with the grooming process. Be prepared for the additional expense of dog grooming.

Overall, cavapoochons are exceptional dogs that make wonderful family pets.
